FAQ

What are non-destructive evaluations?

Think of a valuable asset like a cargo ship, airplane, or launch vehicle. During operation, assets are susceptible to damage, stress, and deterioration. How can we identify such issues without resorting to physically cutting open the hardware?  The answer is by non-destructive evaluations.  Non-destructive evaluation is a number of methods used to inspect materials or structures without causing any damage.  These approaches enable us to detect potential issues early on by taking a “peek” inside, ensuring the integrity without the need for dismantling or invasive inspections.

What methods are used in non-destructive evaluations?

At Modality we are versed in many of the non-destructive methods such as ultrasound, X-ray radiography, infrared/thermography, shearography and microwaves. Among these, ultrasound is considered one of the most robust techniques.  It is often beneficial to use multiple methods together because each technique has its strengths and limitations. By combining different methods, we can cross-validate the results, increasing confidence in the inspection findings and ensuring that potential issues are more comprehensively identified.

What sets Modality apart from its competitors?

What sets Modality apart from its competitors is our team of leading experts from the aerospace industry.  We developed cutting-edge technology rooted in traditional non-destructive methods that we are now bringing to other industries. We offer turn-key solutions, audit manufacturing processes, failure analysis evaluations, and provide employee training on advanced inspection techniques. Additionally, our unique signal processing capabilities take our inspections to the next level by uncovering information that traditional non-destructive inspections cannot. This combination of deep industry expertise, innovative technology, and advanced signal processing ensures the highest level of confidence in technical fields.

What significance does the aerospace background hold?

The materials utilized in aerospace are consistently at the forefront of innovation across all industries. Engineered to endure the most rigorous conditions, they pose challenges for inspection using traditional non-destructive methods. At Modality, our team originates from the aerospace sector, where innovation is inherent. We are accustomed to swiftly addressing complex challenges with a blend of expertise and creativity.

What are the benefits of integrating data management and AI tools in non-destructive evaluation?

Data management and AI tools play a crucial role in non-destructive inspections by integrating various inspection methods and analyzing past data to make the most informed decisions. These tools allow data from different inspection techniques, such as ultrasound, X-ray, and thermal imaging, to communicate seamlessly. By aggregating and analyzing historical inspection data, AI can identify patterns that might not be evident through individual inspections alone.  Modality AI algorithms can cross-reference data from multiple methods to confirm the presence of a defect.

Does Modality offer services for all industries?

Yes we do.  Materials differ depending on the industry, but our background covers a broad spectrum. At Modality, we have deep expertise in inspecting and understanding various materials, including metals, composites, foams, and coatings. This diverse knowledge allows us to effectively address the unique challenges posed across multiple industries.
